Anyone have any ideas on decorating a shelf?
Q. I am completely stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for decorating one? It has three shelves on it, it is glass and it is on the wall to the left in my living room. Right now, all it has on it is a etched glass that lights up and changes colours and that is not going to stay there.

A. If you have any collections of anything you could put them up there. My shelves on my walls have a few pictures of my husband and children, candles and unique candle holders, i have one with some books on it, a small bamboo plant in a decorative vase with decoritive rocks in it. Just experiment with things you already have and see what you like. You can always buy a few neat looking nick nacks at the local dollar store and see what you like best!! Good Luck and I really hope this helps!!

Should i take decorating classes if i want to start a business in interior Staging?
Q. I can't go to interior design school because: 1. I don't want to be an interior designer 2. because i'm already getting a bachelor's in something else 3. design school is too expensive i simply want to stage interiors and exteriors to sell homes, apartment, condos, office spaces, commercial spaces; for individuals, major real estate investment/ property selling companies, and furniture stores. Can i learn staging/ decorating through books or decorating classes? without having to fully go back to school?

A. sure, short-cuts are always the answer! There maybe some classes you might not need, so skip those for now. Ok, you've started this Staging company, tell me why I need to hire you? (as apposed to the other companies) Please don't tell me I'll do a good job, that what I'm paying for in the first place. What sets you apart from the other companies, what are you going to do that I can't do with the other companies. (Be careful, to much information can be copied

Where can I find pictures of drapes decorating a wedding church?
Q. Where can I find pictures of drapes decorating a wedding church? I have this idea of having long white fabric drapes hang from the center of the ceiling towards the outer parts of the ceiling in the church on my wedding day but I cant seem to find a sample picture that I could take to the person who will be decorating my wedding.

A. Your best bet is to visit your local florist. I assure you, he/she has volumes of wedding shots in every conceivable motif. You can get some great ideas there and the florist will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

what are the basics for decorating each room in a home ?
Q. in decorating each room in a home , there are some basics for everything like colors , pictures , plants ,must do this , must not do that ,...etc. so , what are these basics ?
Asked by haider fouad - Sat Oct 7 05:55:04 2006 - Decorating & Remodeling - 4 Answers - Comments
A. You can stick to three colors and bring one of the colors into the other rooms. Example, if you use blue and white in the living room and accents with pale yellow, then in the dining room you choose green and white you can accent in pale yellow Then you could use yellow in the kitchen. It makes it flow together if all the room are visible. The middle of the pictures are best hung at eye level. I hang mine between my husbands height and mine. Most of the rest is personal choice. Watch out for to much clutter. Walk into the house as if it was a sample house and look for what is out of place.

How early do you start decorating for Halloween?
Q. I live in a huge apartment complex where kids go around trick-or-treati ng, so I want to decorate my balcony and front door with spider webs, orange and black lights, and other Halloween-y things. My sister said October 1st is okay to start decorating, but I think that's still early. What do you think?
Asked by l.marie - Tue Oct 3 13:14:34 2006 - Other - Holidays - 24 Answers - Comments
A. I decorate October 1st. Takes too long to put it all up and take it all down to only be up for two weeks...I think it's fine to put it up now...everyone seems to be doing so. Bottom line is it should be whatever suits your own schedule.

A. -Bigger art makes a bigger impact. -Art and photos normally look best with a mat -Rooms shouldn't have a theme other than colors -It takes a skilled decorator to make dark walls look good -Accent walls rarely look as good as people expect them to, its a highly overrated trend -Look at what you already have (and love) to decide on what to do next. -Browing online before shopping in stores saves you a lot of time -Target and Walmart furniture is crap. If you don't have much money, you're better off driving 100 miles to an Ikea. -JC Penney is a surprisingly great resource for window treatments -Etsy is a great place to buy art

What are some fun Homecoming Hall Decorating ideas for high school students?
Q. Every year in school, during Homecoming (spirit) Week, each grade participates in a hall decorating contest. Each grade is assigned a different hallway. Last year, we simply decorated our hall in school colors whereas the upper classmen had a hallway named "welcome to the jungle" and had an awesome jungle theme! We are looking for creative ideas to decorate this year and would love your help! Any ideas are appreciated, thanks so much!

Decorating ideas for the top of a cabinet?
Q. I have a really pretty entertainment cabinet in my Family Room. Currently, I have 1 large pillar and 2 smaller candles on pillar holders. I also have 4 tealights. I used to have pictures towards the back. I am looking for decorating ideas to mix it up. I have had essentially the same decoration for the past few years. I get most creative around the holidays and am also looking for ideas for that time. Last year, I decided to treat it like a mantle, and hung stockings on the side of the cabinet. I also tried to weave a Christmas type of garland around the candles but just couldn't get it right. I could really use some ideas for everyday decorating and also for the holidays.

A. Golly... there are so many ideas you can try, the mind boggles!!! Have you looked in home decorating magazines while waiting at the checkout lines??? Look for the longest line possible, grab one of the magazines, and start browsing! I'm sure there are a lot of online websites that provide home decorating ideas... and what about all those tv shows on HGTV or DIY? Go to the arts/crafts stores and start going through every aisle... you never know when inspiration will strike. Go to furniture stores, too... their displays often show some very innovative ideas for decorating! have fun!!! I envy you!

A. Sorry, I don't have any pictures to send, but I can give you the ideas that I've used before:) I always think that helium ballooons make a place look "special". Use your black & white ballons and attach them to opposite colors of the curling ribbon, and let alot of it hang down and curl it. Attach them to the tables around your center pieces. Candles & flowers are both great, as centerpieces, and if you can put them on top of mirrors on the tables, it looks fantastic, with the candle light reflecting. You could pick up your red color in just a single red rose. I would use white table coverings. I don't know what your budget is, but if it limited, use black and white (and maybe some red) crepe paper and twist it from a… [cont.]

What are some good decorating ideas for a Gothic/Fantasy theme party?
Q. It's going to be a dress-up costume theme party. Think dark and dreamy. I need ideas for decorating (not expensive). If you still don't understand the theme, it's like fantasy, only not frilly and girly, more dark and evil. But not necessarily evil, just... dark. I may hav a fog machine I can borrow, or buy if I have to. It's also a dance party, so my basement where the dancing is will be the main focus of the illusionary decorating. It will have a strobe light.

A. Candles, but make sure they are out of the way and secured. You don't want anyones swooshing sleeves or hair to catch fire. You can get attractive votive holders fairly inexpensively if you have no holders for tapers. Check the craft store for black or purple silk flowers. Fairy lights are always good for mood lighting- the purple sold at Halloween are best, but at this time of year you can get clear or red ones that will work for Goth. Black tulle, available at a fabric store, is cheap and good for draping over mirrors, doorways or whatever. Get some dead branches, spray paint them black, wrap the fairy lights around them, drape tulle over them. Check all your friend's Halloween decor stashes for ravens, owls and bats and hang/sit them… [cont.]

Q. Hi everyone, I'm thinking of starting a cake decorating business and want input from people who have started a cake decorating business. How did you get business? How much did you charge for each cake? Did you specialize in a type of cake? *Please answer only if you have started a cake decorating business. Thanks! Do you own a cake decorating store? A. What kind of experience do you have? If you've been decorating cakes at a bakery that's well known locally then you would want to mention that every chance you get. If you were in a bakery inside of a larger grocery store that's fine as long as that grocery store is a higher end store that's known for the quality of it's baked goods. If you have a portfolio with photos of cakes that you've decorated that's also helpful. The only kinds of cakes that people usually go to a professional cake baker/decorator for are retirement parties, bar/bat mitzvahs and weddings. You usually charge for a cake based on the size of the cake and the number of people that you expect that cake to serve, and how ornate the decorations are. For a large… [cont.]

A. I would cut out some snowflakes and maybe put glitter on them and hang them from my ceiling mixed with the christmas lights (clear would look best)! Or hang the ornaments from the ceiling with cup hooks. I would also put a small tree in the corner and decorate it to match the colors you are using and maybe wrap a couple of empty boxes to put under it (or if you wanna use a miniature tree if you have a small room, you can decorate some miniature boxes too, so cute)! If you don't already have or don't wanna spend money on a bedding set, you can buy plain red, green or white sheets. Accent the color of the room opposite of the color of your bedding. You can even cut out red and green felt shapes (stars, stockings, candy canes, trees) and use… [cont.]

What are some decorating ideas for a pin up girl themed bathroom?
Q. I recently bought a house. I'm trying to make the finished basement as funky as possible.. I thought of a pin up girl themed bathroom. Any ideas for decorating?

A. I sometimes turn off the lights in public toilets, while the stalls are occupied.

Can decorating designs from around world work together?
Q. I'm decorating my new-ish place and am running into some problems. I love asian design-the fabrics and accessories are really beautiful, although I don't like the spare-ness of the design. I also really love the bright colors and patterns of Indian designs. Because they are quite different, can I have both? How can I put the two together? Does anyone have any good 'net examples? Thanks!

A. Absolutely, as long as you stay true to your deliberately difficult theme. Troublesome will be the distinctly variant designs, putting Asia and India together, but your luck come from both cultures' dominant colors. Sounds like you've discovered this already. Put your spare Asian designs, in throw pillows for instance, alternating with those busier, from India. Keep your drapes a solid neutral, with luck, a common neutral taken from both. Use a lot of navy or black here and there. Net examples, try West Elm for general inspiration and extravagant antiques layouts. Can't try Pier One. They've gone offline.
