What the difference between network card and broadband modem?
Q. Why I must go through modem to connect to the internet? Can I connect to internet just by network card? If modem is like a converter, then what about network card? Does the network card need to convert digital signal to analog before send the data down to the cable? When the other end of the cable is connect to the modem, what happen there? Again another signal convertion by modem?
Asked by S.Eras - Fri May 25 17:47:14 2007 - Computer Networking - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Broadband Modem: Like you say is a converter which converts the signal. A broadband modem will convert your cable service signal into digital, where as a DSL will use your phone lines. Signal conversion happens at the modem but not network card. Network Card: Now your computer needs to talk to this converted signal, and the interface is network card. No, network card does not convert the signal. Just like you need a monitor to display, network card is a communication device for your computer for the high-speed internet. Yes, you can connect to the internet using network card, assuming your home/office has set up the connections and you have rj-45 drops at the location. A typical setup for a home/medium office would be Cable ->>Cable… [cont.]

What is the best modem with wireless built-in to use with Comcast internet?
Q. I don't want to keep renting a modem from Comcast for the rest of my life, so I would like to buy one. I'm wondering which cable modems will work best with Comcast service. I would also like to have an 802.11 n wireless connection, and I want to know if there is a good modem with a wireless router, or if I should get a separate modem and router. Thanks for the help!
Asked by - Sat Nov 14 00:06:19 2009 - Computer Networking - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Most cable and phone companies sell the modems and do not rent them. The type of set up your asking about is referred to as a gateway (modem and router combined). I prefer to use a modem and router separate as if one goes bad then you do not have to replace both at same time. Any major brand router will give good service, look her for the different brands and prices or any computer store. Price can run from about $40.00 and up for a router and modems can run from $50.00 up. You will need a cable modem for Comcast. Not a DSL modem.

A. Yes there r four types of ADSL modems provided by bsnl. TYPE 1, 2,3 and 4. It all depends on you what kind of modem u want.Functionality is all same. When ull fill the broadband application form there wud be details of all modems. Like type 1 has 1 Ethernet port n 1 USB, type 2 has i think 2 Ethernet ports and 2 usb ports, and same difference u wud find in Type 3 and 4. And yes i think type 4 of wireless. If u just want for home use den TYPE 1 is d best ,it costs around 1200 bucks and has 1 Ethernet and 1 USB port. I'd d same one.

What is the difference between using a pre-installed internal modem and using a pc modem card?
Q. I have a somewhat old Sony Vaio PCG-SR5K laptop and it has a pre-installed 56k modem in it. I've used it to get online in the past, but only on dial-up. Other than the fact that one is internal and the other operates through a pcmcia slot, is there a difference between the pre-installed modem I have and these PC Card Modems I keep hearing about? If so, what is the difference? Also, which one of these modems could I use to get online with a cell phone and a data cable? Thanks to anyone who can help me. Sorry. In regards to connecting with a cell phone, what I'm asking is can I use the modem that's already in the laptop to connect to the internet with a cell phone? Or would I need to use another type? I should probably also mention that I… [cont.]

A. For all practical intents and purposes they are the same. The real difference is the physical size of each and the age of the older card. You should be able to configure either to work with the cell phone and data cable. However, it would have to be a data capable of connecting to both the cell and the computer. I hope this helps.

How to protect a modem from electrical surge due to lightning?
Q. Is protecting against higher amperage better than less amperage? Or are you sacrificing response time when you protect against higher amperage. What parameters should I look for when selecting a surge protector for a modem? Thanks I am not trying to protect these modems against a direct lightning hit, but rather line surge due to lightning.

How do you connect your modem directly to your xbox 360 without a router?
Q. I need to download the update but I dont have a router of anysort, I just have a mtn hsdpa usb modem. Can I just plug it into the back my xbox in the USb port???
Asked by Superman - Thu Jun 11 10:35:32 2009 - Xbox - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Well you couldn't plug that modem into your 360, BUT...you could use Internet Connection Sharing to connect your Xbox to your PC, and use the internet connection the PC already has from the modem with the Xbox as well. From the drop-down menu on this page, click 'Windows ICS Connection: USB'. The only thing you will need is an ethernet cable.

Q. OK, so i have a comcast Arris modem and a d-link di-524 wireless router... where my Ethernet cord a post to go for my xbox live there's already a Ethernet cord there connecting to the modem. There are Ethernet slots in the router but i dont know if i can connect them in there. Where can i connect the Ethernet cord in the modem? If so how do i do it?
Asked by bjr0we - Sun May 3 14:00:39 2009 - Computer Networking - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. If you're using your router simultaneously, then you need to plug your Xbox in to the router, if it has ethernet ports. If your router doesn't have ethernet ports, then you need to unplug the router from the modem and use the ethernet port on the modem. If you don't want to go that way, You can (a) purchase a wireless piece for your xbox that will connect to your router or (b) you can buy a different router with wired/wireless capabilities.

I already have a DSL modem installed, is there any way I can install a second modem?
Q. I have a new modem but I think it's too slow. I don't want to mess with my dad's configuration, but I have a phone line in my room with the old modem. Is there any way I can set that up in my room and have two modems on one line?
Asked by Dale H - Sun Nov 16 15:48:17 2008 - Computer Networking - 2 Answers - Comments

A. No. Depending on your provider's setup you end up with either nothing on the second modem or nothing on either modem. Connect, with a wired connection to the modem, to and check your connection speed - it should be within 10% of what you should be getting. That has nothing to do with downloads - your download speed is the SLOWEST of connection speed, path speed (seldom over 1mbps) and upload speed of the server you're downloading from. The internet is a LOT slower than even the slowest current modems (I have an ancient cable modem that's faster than the current internet.), and that's where slow downloads come from. And there's nothing you can do about it. A faster connection is useful only if you do multiple downloads, if you have multiple… [cont.]

How do I work my direct modem connection for xbox live without restarting the modem?
Q. I've been connecting my Xbox 360 to the modem directly, but I always have to power cycle the modem after reconnecting the ethernet cable and my dad's getting scared off messing up the power plug. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate them. Please don't suggest 'get a router' because I am going to get one soon, just not sure when. And I really am trying to avoid spending more money than I already will be. And I already leave the power cord plugged in, forgot to mention. Thanks for trying to help though.

Whats the difference between broadband and 56k modem?
Q. I'm buying a laptop but I need a fast internet for job communication. I know broadband is supposed to be fast, but is a 56k modem fast too? I have a 56k modem in this pc I use at home on dial up, but I when I connect it says 19.2kbps, it never gets higher. If a laptop comes with a 56k modem does that mean It will be double time than dial up at home?
Asked by The_55th - Mon Jun 29 12:23:56 2009 - Other - Computers - 5 Answers - Comments

A. 56k is the maximum speed that modem can achieve. In reality, the best dial up tops out around 53K or so. At home you also have a 56K modem. 19.2 is just the fastest your connection can maintain. Broadband is an entirely different type of connection than dial up. It is much much faster, and uses different types of modems to connect. Any modern laptop will have an ethernet adapter whcih can be plugged intot he broadband modem provided by your ISP, and also a Wi Fi adapter to connect to wireless networks.

A. My brother in law has Comcast and I helped him out with a network problem a few weeks ago. The cable modem they gave him felt really cheap and of poor quality. I don't know if Comcast uses the same cable modems for everyone everywhere though. I do know that the cable modems that Cox Communications uses are really very good, such as the Motorola Surfboard SB5101 link: See if you can ask them what model cable modem that they would install and then ask them if they are able to use one of your own. Then go look some info on the one that they provide and see if it is good or not and buy a better one like the surfboard if theirs is bad.

How come DSL connection work if modem is plugged into one specific phone jack and not another?
Q. I had problems with my DSL connection before. A technician was sent in and he worked on it. He worked on a phone jack in the basement where my previous room used to be and the internet works fine if the DSL modem is plugged into there. However, if I bring the modem upstairs and plug it into another phone jack, the connection does not work. Any suggestions?
Asked by Sakai Y - Tue Jun 30 14:52:56 2009 - Computer Networking - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Most DSL installations require a "splitter" on the phone line. Often, this is just a little "dongle" with a short piece of telephone cord on one end and a telephone jack on the other. The other way is to have a technician connect the splitter at the main cable. You may need to purchase a splitter and install it on your new phone line. Fortunately, these are fairly cheap and can be purchased for under $10.
