Parchment Paper Answers
When baking, can I use waxed paper instead of parchment paper?
Q. I want to bake a recipe today, but forgot that it requires parchment paper. Its really snowy out this morning and I don't want to drive. Can I use waxed paper in the same way?
Asked by Janet T - Wed Dec 16 08:06:05 2009 - Cooking & Recipes - 5 Answers - Comments
A. Yes, you can use it...depending on what you are baking Parchment is coated with chemically inert silicone, and is meant to be used in the oven, it doesn't burn. Wax paper is coated with a food grade wax that literally disintegrates while baking. You shouldn't use it if you are making cookies...that's the only use it can't be put to because the greater portion of the paper is not covered, and it will burn. Otherwise, its a good idea to lightly grease and flour the pan before putting in the wax paper, and also lightly greasing and flouring it.

Is it better to use an aluminum foil pan with or without bleached parchment paper?
Q. Which is more unhealthy the bleached parchment paper or the aluminum from the pan?

A. This is an easy question to answer. Parchment paper, bleached or unbleached is safer than using aluminum cookware. Unbleached parchment paper is safer than bleached parchment paper. . Cooking parchment is a sheet of bleached or unbleached paper impregnated with silicone. The silicone makes it releasable, that is, food won t stick to it. . The use of bleached parchment is problematical. It "might" leach dioxin. It "may" leach dioxin. Hard to know for sure. The silicon has some sealing effect on the paper. To be absolutely safe, use unbleached parchment. . I use parchment paper to cook chicken in a George Forman Mini Roaster. Can you use wax paper instead of parchment paper for no-bake bars?
Q. I am making chocolate chip cookie dough bars and the recipe says to press the bars onto parchment paper in a 8 by 8 pan. I don't have parchment paper. Is it okay if I use wax paper instead since I am not baking the bars? Will the wax paper prevent the bars from sticking?
Asked by Elizabeth - Mon May 30 21:00:03 2011 - Cooking & Recipes - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Normally I wouldn't recommend substituting wax paper for parchment paper, but since you aren't baking them, I think you'll be fine. They should serve their purpose well! =)

How do I "age" paper or what kind of parchment to use?
Q. I am working with some children for a contest, and I wanted to create a "antique" looking certificate to be awarded to the top 3 winners together with their prizes. 1. Is there anyway I can "age" regular A4 size papers? 2. Someone suggested I use parchment paper, but the only parchment paper I know are those similar to Waxed Paper used for baking and doesn't look very ancient nor "antiquish" hehe... are there alternative non-animal papers I can use?
Asked by Sheena - Wed Oct 4 02:12:34 2006 - Hobbies & Crafts - 11 Answers - 2 Comments
A. 1. Brew a very hot cup of coffe or tea 2. Lay a sheet or two of coppy paper on to a cookie sheet 3. Pour Tea/Coffe untill paper is wet 4. Drain the excess liquid 5. Put cookie sheet in oven and leave untill dry not longer 6. Do Not Leave Oven Unattended as paper could catch fire 7. after paper is dry use a match to burn edges 8. once paper is dry and aged how you want, you cant write on it and even put through your printer

How can I tell the difference between wax paper and parchment paper?
Q. I need parchment paper. I have a box of wax paper, and I found some unknown type of papers in my pantry. It felt sort of like wax paper, but the last time I felt parchment paper, it felt like wax paper too. So is there a way I can tell the difference between wax and parchment paper?

A. Wax paper is waxy on both sides and is opaque. Parchment paper is a solid white paper that is impregnated with silicone. They are not interchangeable. Parchment is able to be heated, but wax paper will melt.

Does parchment paper that office max sells can be used for baking?
Q. Does anyone know the parchment paper that are sold in office max can be used for baking? And what kind of glue that can be used for baking purposes? thanks for your inputs. I want to make my own muffin cups. I am having a hard time looking for the ones that will fit my cupcake mold. Does anyone then know how to make a muffin cup without using a glue?

A. No, the parchment paper that Office Max sells is not silicone coated and is made for printing purposes only. The package does not state that it is foodgrade and it's a safe bet because of this that it's not. You don't need glue to make muffin cups. This was in Martha Stewart Living just this month and I plan to do this all the time from here on in.

How can I get rid of creases on parchment paper?
Q. I purchased replicas of a few historical documents that are printed on parchment paper. However, they came in an envelope and have massive fold marks on them from being folded for so long. How can i get rid of them so when I frame them it doesn't look like they were folded?
Asked by Christopher - Fri Aug 27 22:21:28 2010 - Other - Visual Arts - 1 Answers - Comments
A. If its true parchement like sheepskin, I wouldn't know. But if its just very fancy paper that is pretty thick, I suggest carefully adding a bit of water to the creases (humid sponge- very little water). Then you place each page between some scott towl to avoid and water leakage. Carefully place them under a tower of books (weight of books press down, with the humid creases making the paper slightly more malleable).

Should parchment paper always be used when baking cookies?
Q. Hello, there. I have made several attempts to bake cookies, and all of them ended up badly. The baked goodies were very flat, thin and taste as if they were fried instead of baked. The recipes I follow call for a baking sheet. Does "baking sheet" mean an aluminum pan with parchment paper? Should parchment paper always be used when baking cookies? I follow the recipes precisely. Will adding more flour help the cookies hold together during baking? Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Asked by LYN D - Tue Mar 30 03:07:52 2010 - Cooking & Recipes - 10 Answers - Comments
A. Cookies that end up flat, thin and fried usually implies the cookie dough is too warm when you baked off the cookies. You should refrigerate the cookie dough about 30 minutes before you bake it off. Another thing is you're not measuring out the ingredients properly or the recipe is just bad (too fickle).

A. When you cook on foil it will heat/ cook the bottom of what ever you place on it more faster than the top. In other words you will not have even cooking like you would with parchment or a "silpat" (a silicone cooking sheet)

A. Parchment paper is a paper you can use to keep the cookies from sticking. It isn't necessary, but it helps a lot to keep anything from sticking to the pan. This kind of paper can be used in the oven without it burning, and you can use it again, ie take one batch of cookies off the pans, and put the next batch on the same piece of parchment paper. Texture is a bit like wax paper, but without the wax.
