can i get poisoned from melted plastic fumes?
Q. well this thing in my room just melted, and it really stinks lol... just wondering if i should open the window (because its reeeally cold outside!) lol weird question i know =) thanks for answers x

A. You should open the window. One exposure to the smoke will do you no harm other than maybe a cracking headache and maybe some nausea/ vomiting. You wont die from it though unless you directly inhale the fumes. Unless the fumes are in sufficient quantity, you could die from carbon monoxide poisoning in that case.

What happens if you inhale burning plastic fumes?
Q. When making my own pipes, I'm careful to avoid any plastic coming in contact with the flame. I have a metal downpipe or stem and then it will go into a plastic chamber. But what if I was burning and inhaling plastic and I didn't know about it? What would happen, if I was unknowingly doing this every day. And don't just tell me to buy a glass bowl or give me pipe-making tips because that doesn't answer my question.

A. ANY time you inhale a foreign chemical into your lungs (that's not medically prescribed) could cause injury or even death. In your case, you could be inhaling some levels of benzene that have been found carcinogenic in lab rats. Long term exposure could cause serious damage.

A. Email Hoax Regarding Freezing Water Bottles and Microwave Cooking The Internet is flooded with messages warning against freezing water in plastic bottles or cooking with plastics in the microwave oven. These messages, frequently titled Johns Hopkins Cancer News or Johns Hopkins Cancer Update, are falsely attributed to Johns Hopkins and we do not endorse their content.

When plastic melts, does it release toxic fumes into the air?
Q. My sister did an art project in which you have to iron it and all the plastic stuck to the iron (melted). First, are there toxins in my house? Second, if I inhale these will I die? Third, what is going to happen?

A. usually not when it melts, but when it starts to decompose. Lots of different plastic compositions out there that decomposes at varoius temperatures or give off toxic plasticizer fumes.

How do I remove burnt plastic fumes from home? Are these fumes dangerous to be breathing?
Q. I left some baby pacifiers sterilizing on the stove by mistake and when I came upstairs the house was filled with smoke. The pacifiers had all melted and even the stainless steel pot was partially melted. The smoke is now gone, but there is a terrible smell in our log home. It is cold outside now and not easy to leave the windows open with a baby in the house. Is it safe for us to be breathing in these fumes or are they just embedded in the log walls?

A. I have heard that melted straws emit a gas that is very toxic, but melted silicone, I don't think so. I don't know how much smoke you had, but if it's still strong after another few hours, I would call Serv Pro or someone who can de-ionize the house.

How much plastic fumes are considered dangerous?
Q. How much plastic fumes must you inhale to have a dangerous effect on you?? I directly inhaled some last night without knowing it, and I feel a bit out of it right now. How much is considered dangerous? How worried should I be?
Asked by chris l - Fri Oct 10 16:54:23 2008 - Respiratory Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Not very concerned at all, unless this is an everyday thing for you. Chronic exposure to any airway irritant is harmful to the normal function of your respiratory system. Anytime you're going to be exposed to something of that sort, you need to wear a mask. They can be bought very inexpensively at most auto parts retail stores. God bless!

Is it legal for factories to release plastic fumes into the atmosphere?
Q. If a plastic company releases plastic fumes into the atmosphere, is it legal? My uncle used to work for one and the fumes spread throughout my hometown.
Asked by Johnny Y - Sun May 20 13:01:39 2007 - Law & Ethics - 5 Answers - Comments

A. It depends upon the location of the factory and the application of the EPA with regard to the specific particulates that are emitted. A lot of the EPA standards are created by law makers -- not necessarily speaking with your best health-interests in mind.

Can inhaling plastic fumes lead to brain damage?
Q. I did it once, on accident. I'm not exposed to it frequently.
Asked by Tim - Sun Feb 28 01:06:45 2010 - Other - Health - 1 Answers - Comments

A. If it just happened one time, I doubt it would cause brain damage. But the likely thing would be that it might do some damage to your lungs. If you didn't have any lung problems right after, then I wouldn't worry. I inhaled some plastic fumes one time 30 years ago and so far I'm ok;)

ive inhaled plastic fumes?
Q. i put a plastic bin over a lamp (stupid) becuase the amp was too bright and it burnt a hole in it. its in my room and its night time at the moment. ive opened the window and put my fan on but are these fumes dangerous to me? should i sleep elsewhere tonight?
Asked by flossie - Mon Aug 13 17:51:25 2007 - Respiratory Diseases - 1 Answers - Comments

A. If you've kept the window open and put the fan on, the fumes should be gone. If it would make YOU feel safer, sleep somewhere else for the night and let the room air out a bit more. As long as you are not inhaling the smoke itself, you should be fine; the smell isn't too nice though. Good luck!

Is burning plastic and sniffing the fumes an effective way to cure pollen allergies?
Q. My father once told me to do it and it works in my case. Now I was wondering is it harmful?
Asked by James Gower - Fri May 11 01:12:53 2007 - Allergies - 11 Answers - Comments

A. This may undoubtably be the dumbest thing I have heard of. The human body has its own natural defensive mechanism that consists of mucosa and hair to trap particles that will invade and harm the respiratory tract. The hairs you may so delicatly pluck are imperative to the defense mechanism inside the naraes of the respiratory system. In our daily lives we filter and obstruct repeated carcinocgens that will negatively and adversely affect our our health. The thought that intentional inhalation of caustic and cancer causing agents would be convienient for the relief of sinuses is ludacris. Allegies are strictly a hyperesponsiveness to a noxious stimuli leading to bronchial and systemic contriction with a seconday inflamatory response. I… [cont.]

Is it safe to smoke weed once it's been exposed to fumes of burning plastic?
Q. I bought weed and the guy put it in plastic bag, not a zip lock baggy but like plastic grocery sack and burnt the plastic with the weed inside, sealed it with the heat. Is it safe to smoke that weed? Seems like the fumes would be really bad. You might as well not even try to respond like some internet comedian or voice of reason. Nobody cares. I just wanted a quick, accurate answer.

How do I clear melted-plastic fumes out of the microwave?
Q. When a "microwave-safe" bowl isn't, you end up with a lot of melted plastic. Some of it, of course, ends up in the atmosphere and settles on the walls and inner parts of the microwave. So how do I clean the microwave well enough to make sure I don't get poisoned with the next food I put in? (Assuming, of course, the next microwave-safe bowl I put in really is.)
Asked by Stam - Sun Feb 17 12:39:25 2008 - Maintenance & Repairs - 2 Answers - Comments

A. You aren't going to get pasted on residue that will poison you when you use the unit again. You could get some strange smells for a while. Add lemon juice to water, about half and half, and heat to medium high--just to the boiling point. Don't open the door. Let it sit for a while, maybe two hours. Remove the juice, wipe out the interior with a non scratching cleanser, and then do it once more. The odors may slightly linger but not for long. They will be replaced by new cooking odors before long.

Are the fumes from the melted plastic toxic?
Q. Okay so I have a plastic Fry Daddy Fryer and it was filled with grease cooling down from when we used it at dinner. It was on the stove top and someone either turned on the wrong burner or hit the button for it by accident. Someone in the kitchen noticed it and apparently the bottom of the fryer had completely melted away, letting the grease go onto the hot burner and it could have started a fire but we cleaned it up before that happened. Are the fumes from the melted plastic toxic? Is there anything to help the problem?
