Sin

Sin is an act that violates divine will or the moral code of a religion. In a deeper sense, sin is the corruption of a being —acts which are wicked or destructive, and can cause a being to fall from grace and divine providence. While sins are generally actions, thoughts and internalized feelings may also be sinful, as these in themselves may be corrupt, and cause one to commit greater sins. Common ideas surrounding sin in various religions include:
A common concept of "sin" concerns acts which are wantonly destructive, such as murder and rape. Many, though not all, crimes are also regarded as sins. From common sense there is an understanding that some sins are greater than others, and in this nuanced concept of sin, sins fall in a spectrum from least corrupt and evil to the greatest evil. In Catholicism, sins which are least corrupt are regarded as venial sins —such sins may be regarded as parts of human living, and carry little divine consequence. Conversely sins which are of great evil may be regarded as mortal sins —sins which are said to have the dire consequence of mortal penalty. Sins of careless living (gluttony, casual sex, constant play, inebriation, gambling), while relatively minor, may be destructive and lead to greater sins (cf. The Seven Deadly Sins). Another concept of sin deals with those things which exist on Earth, but not in Heaven. Food, for example, while a necessary good for the (health of the temporal) body, is not of (eternal) transcendental living and therefore its excessive savoring is considered a sin. Original sin is the concept that sin entered the human world through Adam and Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden, and that human beings have since lived with the consequences of this first sin. The term may also refer to the state of having committed such a violation, and is often simply used to signify an action that is prohibited or considered wrong by some person or group of people; in some religious or social traditions, sin can refer not only to physical actions taken, but also to thoughts and internalized motivations and feelings. Colloquially, any thought, word, or act considered immoral, shameful, harmful, or alienating might be termed "sinful". From Wikiquote under the
